Laos - Lao gov't focuses on food security after floods

Vientiane (Vientiane Times/ANN) - A meeting of Lao government members, the Mayor of Vientiane and provincial governors ended in Vientiane yesterday after discussing dry-season food production and villagers' living conditions in the wake of recent flooding.

Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong chairs the meeting of government members, the Mayor of Vientiane and provincial governors.

Speaking at the close of the meeting, Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong said he appreciated the efforts by various government sectors to restore the situation to normal in many parts of the country following the impact of recent flooding, enabling local people to resume their livelihoods.

Despite these achievements, the PM urged all relevant sectors in Vientiane and the provinces to focus on boosting agricultural production to ensure food security over the coming year.

He also said that government sectors should focus more on maintaining public security starting from now as part of preparations for the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit to be held in Vientiane next November.

The government agreed to try to source more funding to develop infrastructure, including roads in Vientiane that need to be improved ahead of the Summit.

The government is aware that the Summit will be the largest international event ever to be held in Laos, with some 50 heads of state and government from Europe and Asia expected to attend.

The government is preparing various facilities, including upgrading Wattay International Airport to accommodate larger aircraft and building the Lao International Convention Centre and other venues.

Thongsing urged government sectors to keep Vientiane clean and green for the Summit by encouraging people to plant trees and keep the streets clean.

He observed that some parts of the city are currently covered in dust, and urged the relevant sectors to focus their attention on the problem now, rather than waiting until the summit is approaching.

The Prime Minister also requested that authorities in Vientiane and the provinces foster a spirit of patriotism by encouraging ordinary people to participate in the task of national development.

Thongsing also touched upon issues related to the implementation of the four breakthrough approaches approved at the 9th Party Congress in Vientiane this year. He said all these approaches aimed to alleviate poverty amongst ordinary people and lift Laos out of least developed country status by 2020.

The Prime Minister encouraged all sectors to implement the breakthrough approaches as a matter of urgency, and address any issues and procedures that delay national development.

Most people who attended the meeting, which opened on Monday, agreed that officials who work only for their own benefit should face legal action or be removed from their jobs.

Meeting participants also noted the strong growth of the Lao economy in the first quarter of 2011-2012, with economic growth remaining above 8 percent and inflation kept under control.

They concluded that the livelihoods of the Lao people have seen improvement and public order has been maintained, which has helped to facilitate commercial productivity at the village level.
