VietNamNet Bridge – This year Vietnam ranks 112th out of 183 countries in the Transparency International (TI) ranking list on corruption, with 2.9 points, said vice chief government inspector Tran Duc Luong.
At the conference to review five years of the Law on Combating Corruption in Vietnam, Luong said that last year Vietnam ranked 116th on TI’s list, with 2.7 points.
“This year, Vietnam attains four more points, which shows that anti-corruption task in Vietnam has made some improvement. However, the change is unbasically,” he added.
According to TI, countries with less than 5 points are those with rampant corruption. Most of these countries are in the transformation process.
Luong said that to curb corruption in these countries, TI introduces three solutions: making information, except for information that harms national defense and habits and customs, transparent; well controlling national assets and income, including natural resources; bringing in full play the role of society in fighting corruption.
Nguyen Van Tuan Dung, Hanoi’s chief inspector, said that in five years implementing the Law on Combating Corruption in Hanoi, corruption is still reported at some state agencies that are responsible to grant land use right certificates, assessing projects, etc. Most of corruption cases in the city are detected by citizens.
In the last five years, Hanoi policy have uncovered and taken criminal proceeding against 273 defendants in 125 cases. The total assets in these cases is estimated at VND900 billion ($42.85 million).
To better prevent corruption, the city authorities have asked officials to make assets declaration on annual basis.
