IN
TIME of increasing international economic competition and growth, the role of
research becomes crucial in attaining national objectives, said Minister of
Development during the opening ceremony of Brunei International Conference on
Engineering and Technology (BICET) yesterday.
Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri
Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman said that further research in several areas should be
undertaken for growth and development.
Developing solar power as an alternative and
sustainable energy resource, taking measures to cut carbon emissions from
fossil fuels, increasing access to clean potable water, improving sanitation to
ensure public health, and strengthening cyber security to fight cyber threats
and warfare like viruses and hacking were some of the research areas on which
the minister emphasised.
He said the issue of sustainability has been
given priority in the recent work on research and development.
"It is the engineers who make decisions
on use of material, energy, the development of infrastructure that comes up
with engineering design and solutions to the sustainability problems."
The minister also stressed the need to
understand the nature of the "limits to growth" so that "we
would not continue in our perilous journey of 'consuming' whatever comes in our
path in the name of 'growth'," he said.
He also said that sustainable development was
crucial in preserving our heritage for future generations.
"What is sustainable depends on our
knowledge and resources and what is a resource depends on our knowledge to use
it."
"The sustainable development concept
(therefore) requires us all to think deeply on the impact, both geographically
and temporally, on our living, the infrastructure we build and products we
produce," he added.
