Indonesia is planning to bring more hospitals up to
international standards, aiming for the country to be a health tourism
destination by 2015.
“Indonesia is always overlooked
while [health tourism] is more synonymous with countries like Singapore,
Malaysia, Thailand or India,” Supriyantoro, the Health Ministry’s director
general for medical services, said on Wednesday.
There are 10 state-run
hospitals in Indonesia — including Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital [RSCM] in
Jakarta — filing for World Class Hospital status with Joint Commission
International, a US-based nonprofit that accredits hospitals around the world.
Currently only three hospitals
in Indonesia — Siloam Hospital and Eka Hospital in Tangerang and the Santosa
Hospital in Bandung — have international accreditation from JCI. All three are
privately run.
Supriyantoro said improving
hospital standards at home would translate to fewer Indonesians traveling
abroad to seek medical care.
Supriyantoro said that Bali’s
Sanglah Hospital had the highest potential to be marketed as a health tourism
destination, as patients can enjoy the resort island while recuperating from
treatment.
The ministry, he said, would
ensure the affordability of medical care at the state-run hospitals eyeing
international accreditation.
“We hope the accreditation
process for RSCM will finish before the end of 2012 and hopefully others will follow
soon.”
