Brunei - 800 university places at ITB for August intake

A TOTAL of 800 places will be on offer for Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) August 2012 intake where prospective students can look forward to a wide range of programmes available with different entry levels and modes of study.

This was said by ITB Director of International and Public Relations Office Hj Ady Syarmin Hj Md Taib during the opening ceremony of the university's Infoday@ITB 2012 yesterday.

Highlighting the exciting year prospective students can expect in the rapidly developing technology university, Hj Ady said:" ITB marks another milestone in 2012 with an expansion in the number of its degree programmes."

"Eight new local first degree programmes and two ITB's own higher diploma (HD) programmes have been introduced this year, making the total number of programmes offered for this year's intake to 29 programmes," he added.

With the introduction of a number of new programmes, ITB will offer 15 degree programmes, 2 ITB Higher Diploma programmes and 12 BDTVEC Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes for its August 2012 intake.

"This translates to 800 number of available study places for the August 2012 entry," said Hj Ady.

Further restating 2012 as a significant year for ITB, Hj Ady announced the start of the localisation of the university's degree programmes in civil engineering, which was previously delivered jointly between ITB and the Queen's University of Belfast under a twinning arrangement for the last nine years.

In addition, ITB will also see a new phase this year as its Petroleum and Chemical Engineering articulation degree programmes with the University of New South Wales, Australia will commence with a 2+2 arrangement, where previously the articulation arrangement is 1+3.

According to Hj Ady, Infoday@ITB is equivalent to an open day in other institutions where it stands as one of the platforms for closer and direct interaction with prospective students and general public.

Infoday@ITB provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to gain an insight into what it would be like to study in ITB where faculty members are available for first-hand information on the programmes on offer, programme modules and structure, entry requirements and career pathways.

In line with Infoday@ITB, prospective students were treated to several activities and events.

Programme area talks and briefings were scheduled throughout the day to provide jargon-free, interactive and casual overview of the programme areas and career pathways.

Consultation rooms were also set up for prospective students and visitors to have one-to-one discussion with academics on programme and admissions-related matters.

For an insight into the teaching and learning experience in ITB, guided group tour of the campus and laboratories were conducted.

During Infoday@ITB, some of the highlights included selected top projects by the ITB HND students, which were showcased to provide visitors some ideas on the scope of learning in ITB and its outcomes. The student community in ITB showcased some of the co-curricular activities (CCA) clubs in ITB to give visitors a sense of the non-academic and social aspects of student's life at the university.

Giving prospective students a heads-up on the best person to go to during Infoday@ITB, Hj Ady advised that "the best person to ask about student experience and learning in ITB will be the students themselves".

"Student volunteers who will be involved in welcoming the visitors play a significant role during the Infoday in sharing first-hand experience of a student's life in ITB."

Hj Ady informed that there will be roadshows at selected schools and colleges conducted in the coming months.

ITB is also exploring the possibility of engaging industry partners to collaborate to promote prospective students interest in the field of engineering, business and computing.

The InfoDay@ITB 2012 was launched by ITB Vice-Chancellor Dato Paduka Dr Hj Omar Hj Khalid at the institute premise in Jerudong.

The two-day open day will continue again on Saturday, February 11, 2012 to provide prospective students and visitors continous access to information pertaining to programmes offered at the university.
