Brunei - Vietnam foreign minister arrives in Sultanate

VIETNAMESE Foreign Affairs Minister Pham Binh Minh (pic) arrived in the Sultanate last night for a one-day introductory visit to review, expand and strengthen existing relations between the two countries, The Brunei Times has learned.

The one-day visit is part of his three-state official visits around the region from February 6 to 9, according to a report by VietnamNet an online newspaper yesterday.

The report said that the visit was made at the invitation of Brunei's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT) His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.

Speaking to The Brunei Times yesterday, Vietnam Ambassador to Brunei Pham Binh Man confirmed the news of Minh's arrival in the Sultanate and shared that the visiting minister is scheduled to have a meeting with HRH Prince Mohamed on bilateral issues this morning.

"It's part of his introductory visit, as he has only taken office in August 2011," he said.

He also said that the meeting would discuss the existing relations between both nations and cover all aspects of cooperation.

"As a member of ASEAN, we (Brunei and Vietnam) have a lot of room for further cooperation in all aspects including economy and political relations, especially since we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of our diplomatic ties soon," the Vietnamese Ambassador said.

The online report also stated that Brunei now ranks 12th among 94 foreign investors in Vietnam with US$48.5 billion (approximately $60.5 billion) poured into 124 projects.

The two countries will celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2012, the report added.

According to information stated on MoFAT's website, diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and Vietnam were established on February 29, 1992.
