Facebook
and other social media users must be responsible in posting their comments,
said the Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd
Bakri Zinin.
He said the number of reported cases involving
violence, which started from social media argument, was low.
However, he said police did not rule out that
many might have gone unreported.
"There were only several reports lodged
on physical violence which started from comments posted in Facebook or other
social media.
"However, this does not mean that there
were not many incidents.
"There could be many more, which the
victims did not come forward and lodge report with us," he said.
Bakri was commenting on an incident where a
15-year-old female student was beaten up by her Form Five seniors in Kangar,
Perlis on Tuesday.
It was reported that the beating, which landed
the Form Three student in hospital, was sparked by postings by both parties
ridiculing each other, including a tug-of-war over a boy on Facebook.
Bakri said the new media users should not
misuse the technology and abuse others, which action is against the law.
"The social media is there for our
conveniences.
However, users still have to be responsible in
utilising it.
"It should not be used to offend others
or to instill hatred and chaos."
He said those who do not adhere to the law in
their posts on Facebook or other social media -- like posting malicious or
defamatory comments, can also have legal action taken against them.
"This new technology, which was created
for our benefit, can always create tension should they be misused -- it can
spark racial tension, problems with family members, colleagues and friends, and
much more.
"My advice to new media users is for them
to abide by the law and not abuse technology. If they break the law, action
will be taken against them," he said.
