Malaysia
will ease the plasticizer-prevention border control on Taiwan-made food imports
next month, a report said yesterday.
The Malaysian government notified Taipei on
Thursday that it will lift the border control on 11 categories of Taiwan-made
food items starting March 1, the Central News Agency (CNA) reported.
The control on biscuits and fruit drinks will
remain for a little longer until March 16, the CNA said.
Malaysia is among many countries, including
Singapore, China, South Korea, that put Taiwan food imports under strict
monitoring after the outbreak of the plasticizer scare last May.
They required exporters of Taiwan food items
to produce government certifications that their shipments were plasticizer
free.
China and South Korea already dropped the
requirements in August and November last year, respectively, the CNA said.
Singapore earlier this year also announced
that such certifications will not be needed starting from March 1.
The 11 food categories in Malaysia's March 1
ease cover such products as sports drinks and fruit jams, the CNA cited
economics officials as saying.
The food shipments to Malaysia will return to
normal export procedures, said the officials from the economics ministry's
Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI).
According to BSMI statistics, since the
plasticizer scare, the bureau has issues 4,431 letters of certification for
food exports worth more than NT$778 million (S$33.2 million), the CNA said.
A major local supplier of food additives was
found to have used toxic plasticizers in making its products in May 2011. Many
famous food companies were among its victims.
A couple running the food additive company has
been arrested and put on trial.
