Vietnam - People founded schools struggling to maintain classes with few students

VietNamNet Bridge – The classes with several students are the thing that can be seen at many people founded universities. However, the schools still have to struggle to maintain the classes to avoid the shutting down of the training branches.

People founded schools have experienced a difficult enrolment season, because they could not find enough students who could meet the requirements to enroll. And now it’s the time for them to suffer. The schools have shut down many training branches, but they still have to drag out the miserable existence of other branches, for some reasons.

The gloomy classes with few students

There are many classrooms at the Asia-Pacific Faculty of the Hong Bang International University, but many of them were empty or only had several students, about 10 students in each. The grammar lesson of a Japanese studies class gathered only 14 students, who sit together near the blackboard, leaving a big gap behind.

Dieu Thi Bich Hai, Deputy Dean of the Asia-Pacific Faculty of the school, Head of the Japanese studies major, said that this is the year when the school enrolls the lowest number of students.

According to Hai, in 2006, the school could enroll 70 students for the major, while the figure was 50 in 2007. In the next years, the school enrolled about 20 students each year for the major. Meanwhile, only 14 were enrolled this year.

The Chinese studies major seems to have fewer students. Only seven students have been enrolled, but the school still has to keep opening a class. The South Korean studies major has found 16 students. Besides, the school has another class in the major which was set up in 2010 with only seven students.

Hai said that the training branches have become less attractive to students in recent years. Students nowadays do not want to attend C (literature, history and geography) and D group (mathematics, literature and foreign languages) exams any more. They prefer to attend A group exams (mathematics, physics and chemistry) because they can have the opportunities to enroll in economics schools which promise better job opportunities after the graduation.

Hai also said that high schools have not fulfilled their task of giving job career to students well. Therefore, high school students only have poor understanding about training branches, and they just follow others in registering study branches, while they do not make decisions on their own.

At the Hung Vuong University, the civil engineering technology major could only enroll 11 students in 2011, while Japanese studies now only one class with 11 students. Nguyen Thi Mai Binh, Head of the Education Division of the school, said that lecturers have admitted that they feel tired of giving lecturers at the classes with too few students.

Schools struggling to survive

How to arrange money to survive is the big question for schools, when they have to maintain the classes with too few students.

Binh of Hung Vuong University said that the school spends a lot of money to buy equipment that serves the teaching of the civil engineering faculty. However, as the school cannot find enough students, it has been suffering heavy loss.

Hai has also said that her school is asking for the permission from the Ministry of Education and Training to enroll the students who transfer credits from junior colleges (3-year training) to study at the university in order to take full advantage of the equipments and material facilities available

Nguyen Quoc Hop, Head of the Training Division of the Van Hien University, has informed that the school has to close two training majors – literature and sociology, because each faculty could enroll only 10 students. The school has to make such a decision after realizing that the school cannot balance the receipts and expenses. Especially, the number of students is not stable, because about 10 percent of students leave every year.
