Vietnam - Students see more job opportunities from working time changes

VietNamNet Bridge – A lot of parents now need someone to help them pick up children from schools, because the changes in the working time do not allow them to do that themselves. The demand has brought new job opportunities to university students.

Nguyen Thi Giang works at the Hanoi Medical University in the central area of Hanoi, but she lives in My Dinh residential quarter, about 10 kilometers far from the office.

Under the new working time regime, Giang will have to stay late at the medical school until 7 pm. Meanwhile, her son, a first grader of Lomonosov School, finishes school hours at 5 am. As her husband is a serviceman, he cannot take care for the child.

Finally, Giang decided to ask the student who lives on the same floor with her, to bring the child to school and pick him up from school. In the morning, Giang leaves home at 6.30 am and then leaves the child with Van, the student, who will bring the child to school at 7.30 am. In the afternoon, Van picks the child from school, feeds him with a light meal until Giang returns.

The service fee is 500,000 dong a month.

Van said that some three or four parents have asked Van to pick up children from school for them. “It’s great. I have much free time, because I go to class either in the morning or afternoon. Meanwhile, I can earn more money,” Van said.

Nguyen Thu Nhan, who is a lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication in Cau Giay district, has also found a student, who helps bring her boy to school and pick him up from school.

“I have to stay late at the school, and I have to go to evening classes. Therefore, I need someone who can help take care for the child,” she explained.

The student that Nhan has found not only meets and sees off the child, but also helps prepare the dinner for Nhan. “This benefits both. I can have some more time to relax, while the student gets extra money,” she said.

Bui Ngoc Minh in Thanh Xuan district also said he has hired a university student as a “taxi motorbike driver”. The “duty” of the student is to drive Minh’s son to school and from the school. Minh said he has to take care for the milk shop and does not have much time for children.

“Previously, the elder brother would pick up his sister when he finishes school. However, now they study in different shifts. I can only take care for the daughter,” Minh explained.

When asked why Minh wants to hire a university student, not a taxi motorbike driver, Minh said that students are more reliable. His son, a high school student, still needs to be accompanied by someone, because it is dangerous when returning home late.

The new job has made Van and her friends feel happy. “My friends, the students of the Hanoi University of Education and Trade University, have asked me to help find jobs,” Van said.

“We do not have to work hard, while we still can earn big money,” she added. “My friends accept to travel long distance, because they have motorbikes.”

However, Giang said, in the long term, she would have to find out another solution. “I have to pay more money, while I cannot feel secure about the boy. He has to get up too early. Meanwhile, we cannot enjoy dinners, because the boy has to wait several hours for the mother’s dinner,” she said.
