Brunei - Plan to check non-communicable diseases

THE Minister of Health yesterday said a "Strategic National Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)" is currently under way to address the widespread and increasing figures of non-communicable and chronic diseases in the country.

This strategic action plan will adopt a more comprehensive "common risk factors approach", by outlining several strategic action plans that consist of more effective and systematic planning, control and prevention programmes against NCDs.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Md Yusof said at the Eighth Legislative Council (LegCo) session yesterday this plan will include reviewing the effectiveness of current measures and actions.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Adanan added a committee will soon be established to focus on five aspects of the plan: health promotion and prevention, clinical management, research, surveillance and evaluation, capacity building and formulating law and policy development.

As part of efforts to expand and strengthen Brunei's healthcare system, the minister said they have been implementing strategic measures as outlined in the Health Promotion Blueprint 2011-2015 and increasing programmes promoting a healthy lifestyle.

These include the healthy mukim programme, public education and awareness programme, healthy workplace programme and providing guidelines on healthy living, such as the national dietary guideline, serving and selling food and drinks in the workplace guideline as well as the school canteen food and drinks guideline.

He also said the ministry will soon set up the National Committee on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition.

"It (committee) aims to raise the effectiveness of promoting and strengthening the procedures in spreading awareness, as well as the expediting the practice of breastfeeding in the country," he said.

Throughout the year and beyond, YB Pehin Dato Hj Adanan said the ministry will be more committed to raising the quality of the healthcare system, and towards achieving excellent healthcare.

He added this year, the ministry will direct its attention and efforts towards updating and strengthening the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of every department, hospital, health centre, clinic and division, to provide the best services by adopting best practices according to international standards until it reaches ISO standards.

"The ministry is hoping that the status of Brunei's healthcare system will at least be at par with developed countries, and that it will fulfil the health standards determined and acknowledged by the World Health Organisation (WHO)," he said.
