Rainy season may be a couple months away, but
Phnom Penh is already at work on plans to ease the strain on a drainage system
that sometimes leaves the capital’s side streets waist-deep in water.
The
Phnom Penh municipality is set to begin contruction on Monday for a project
funded by the Japanese government, in order to improve both the infastructure
of the city’s drainage system and its capability to handle flood water.
This
drainage project is the third phase of a plan laid out by city hall in 1999
with hopes to make vast physical improvements to the capital.
According
to City Hall, the Cambodian and Japanese governments last week signed an
agreement stating that the Japanese would provide 3.7 billion yen (US$ 44.2
million) in financial support for the project, which is slated to wrap up
construction in October 2015.
Japanese
company Sumitomo Mitsui Construction is spearheading the major changes being
made to the drainage system.
