Singapore - More help for pre-schools to achieve certification

SINGAPORE: Pre-schools which need help to achieve certification under the Singapore Pre-School Accreditation Framework (SPARK) may now get consultation from a new scheme launched by the Education Ministry.

The Quality Assurance Consultancy scheme helps pre-schools review and enhance their centre structures, processes and teaching in preparation for SPARK assessment.

The scheme costs S$1,250, of which 80 per cent is subsidised by MOE.

SPARK was launched in November 2010 to encourage pre-schools to strive for excellence in the holistic development of young children.

But the take-up rate has been low - only 69 pre-schools and childcare centres out of about 1,500 have been certified.

To enhance teacher quality, Minister of State for Education Lawrence Wong said the ministry is also making more scholarships available for kindergarten teachers.

The ministry is also drafting a guide on professional pathways for kindergarten educators.
