VietNamNet Bridge – The Ministry of Education and Training MOET will only declare the subjects for the final exams in one month. However, since early February, high schools have been gearing up to prepare their students for the important exam.
Some high schools in HCM City have said that the number of bad students this year is higher than the previous year; therefore, the schools need to give more teaching hours to the students to help them review for their exam.
Tan Phong High School in district 7, HCM City, for example, has opened a tutoring class for poor students. Teachers have been assigned by the school’s board of management to keep a close watch over the students since the new academic year began.
Pham Van Tien, Headmaster of Tan Phong School said that the students of the school live in different districts, which makes it difficult to arrange tutoring timetable. While other schools can arrange evening classes, Tan Phong needs to finish tutoring classes prior to 6 pm, because many students live far from the school.
Now 12th graders go to school both in the morning and afternoon. Curricular lessons are given in the morning, while the exam preparation lessons are given in the afternoon. It is expected that by the end of March 2012, when MOET declares the exam subjects, the poorest students would be gathered in the same classes which will receive more intensive teaching.
In Can Gio district, Phan Thi My Linh, Headmaster of Binh Khanh High School, has said that teachers now prioritize to tutor the weak students. However, it is really a difficult task. As students mostly live in the suburbs, it is difficult to gather them, while the students from poor families usually give up lessons.
A teacher of a high school in Thu Duc district said that the latest test has found 20 percent of the school’s students have average learning capacity, while 15 percent of students are weak. The 15 percent students have been asked to spend all the time to review for the exam, at curricular time, team learning time and private tutoring classes.
After Tet, teachers were asked to provide the lists of weak students, give tutoring to the students and take responsibility for their learning results. Therefore, teachers now bear a hard pressure of assisting the weak students to improve their knowledge.
Private schools namely Thang Long in district 5, Lac Hong in district 12, Thanh Nhan in Tan Phu District and Hoang Dieu in Tan Binh, all have aid that they organize weekly and monthly tests to discover the knowledge gaps of students so as to fix the problems quickly. Especially, at Thanh Nhan High School, there are many tutoring evening classes (with only 10 students in each), run by good teachers
In Hanoi, Headmaster of Tran Hung Dao High School Dang Viet Ha has said that the school plans to open a specific class for weak students. For the immediate time, students would have mathematics, literature and foreign language lessons. Meanwhile, after one month, after MOET declares the six exam subjects, the students would give the lessons in all the six subjects.
In fact, the students of Tran Hung Dao schools do not have high learning capability (they only got low marks from the high school entrance exam). Therefore, asking them to learn hard is the only solution to minimize the number of students to fail the exams.
Similar special classes have been set up at many other schools in Hanoi. Nguyen Thi Nhiep, Headmaster of Phan Huy Chu High School said that parents applaud the classification of students for better tutoring, while many parents have asked to allow their children to attend the special class.
