Vietnam - Hoi An competes for FutureGov award

Quang Nam Province’s Hoi An Town, Vietnam’s first city to have provided free Wifi access to local resident and tourists, will compete for the FutureGov Award 2012.

Ho Quang Buu, director of the provincial Information and Communication Department yesterday said FutureGov Singapore, a Singaporean magazine specialized in e-government, has officially invited the town to apply as a candidate for the award.

The awards are aimed at honoring achievements in information technology application by government, education and healthcare organizations in the Asia-Pacific region.

The town, where Wifi access is provided free of charge to its locals and visitors using state budget, is making preparations to join the contest, Buu said.

In 2010, two projects of Vietnam’ Foreign Ministry’s Information Center made their way into the final round of the FutureGov Award. One year before, the Vietnamese Sustainable Development Center won the prize “Service innovation”.

Open only to government, education and healthcare organizations, and city administrations, the FutureGov Awards will be presented to winners at a Gala Awards Dinner during the eighth annual FutureGov Summit on October 19 in Thailand.

FutureGov Awards are the international benchmark by which innovation in the public sector is judged – uniquely celebrating agency and project success, as well as the most successful city modernization programs in the region.

In 2011, the awards received 498 nominations from government, education and healthcare organizations throughout Asia.
