Vietnam - Students still prefer economics training majors, despite oversupply

VietNamNet Bridge – The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has decided to make public--the quotas for different training majors to help students choose their future careers.

Quotas for economics majors lowered

According to MOET, universities received more than 500,000 students. The students of economics majors accounted for the overwhelming proportion of the total students admitted to the schools. Meanwhile, 248 out of 416 schools, or 59.62 percent enrolled students for at least one of the four economics relating majors: business administration, finance and banking, economics, and accountancy.

The number of students enrolled for the four majors accounted for 38 percent of the total number of students admitted to the schools. This means that all other training majors only had the remaining 62 percent of quota.

In 2009-2011, the number of students registering to take the university entrance exams to the four majors accounted for approximately 41 percent of the total applications.

The high percentage of students willing to follow economics relating studies, has been explained by the fact that economics school graduates seem to more easily find good jobs.

According to Nguyen Van Ang, Deputy Director of the Planning and Finance Department of the Ministry of Education and Training, high percentage of economics students is still “acceptable” for now. However, he said that if the tendency continues and the proportion increases to 50 percent of the trained students, it would happen that economics school graduates would not find jobs after the training courses.

Experts have also rung the alarm bell over the imbalance in the training major structure. Students rush to study economics relating majors, while schools increase the number of economics students.

They have urged MOET and schools to adjust the enrolment structure, saying that MOET needs to tighten the quotas for economics branches, or the oversupply would occur in 5-7 years, when the students, entering the schools in 2012, would finish schools.

MOET has decided to lower the quota for economics training branches to less than 32 percent in 2012. Schools have been told not to enroll more than 184,300 students for economics, finance and banking. Meanwhile, it is expected that 576,000 students would be admitted to universities this year.

MOET has many times affirmed that the education and training plan would be drawn up based on the demand after policy makers consider the labor force development master plan.

However, experts have pointed out that it would be not an easy task to “train to orders.” No one can say for sure that the students finishing the schools in Thai Nguyen would work in Thai Nguyen after they finish schools.

MOET Minister Pham Vu Luan said that the ministry is checking the training majors of the schools and it would make decision about which majors to be encouraged, and which majors would have to stop enrolling students.

Universities have been given more autonomy to decide their enrolment scale and define the content of the curriculums. However, schools still have to seek the permission from MOET every time when they want to open new training majors.

In the near future, the enrolment information, including the number of students in training at schools, number of students registering to attend exams to schools, and other kinds of information would be found on Internet. The information would help students choose the training majors with which they can easily find jobs after the graduation.

The oversupply has also been warned for vocational schools. Hoang Ngoc Vinh, a senior official of MOET said that the redundancy now can be seen in accountancy and pharmacy. Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien has also discussed with MOET about the oversupply of pharmacy 2-year training school graduates, which has led to the oversupply all over the country.
