VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese teachers, who specialize in preparing students for the university
entrance exam or the entrance exams to the schools for the gifted, are called
the “super rich men” because of their huge profits of hundreds of millions of
dong a year.
T has
been very famous in HCM City as the mathematics teacher. All the high school
students who want to pass the university entrance exam – the most important
exam in their lives – want to attend the private tutoring classes of the
teachers.
The
annual tuition a student has to pay to attend T’s classes is 6 million dong. As
such, T can earn 420 million dong a year from a class with 70 students.
Meanwhile, he runs more than one class, which means that he can earn billions
of dong a year.
The
high income of the teachers has been compared with the huge income of the
richest businessmen. However, analysts say teachers can obtain higher
profitability than businessmen, because they do not have to make investment,
while businessmen have to spend money to invest before they can reap fruits.
Students want to go to prestigious schools,
teachers make big money
In HCM
City, it is estimated that thousands of students want to enroll in the schools
for the gifted, such as Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia, Nguyen Thuong Hien or
Nguyen Du. It is not easy to obtain a seat at the prestigious schools;
therefore, students have to well prepare for the entrance exams.
Local
residents whisper into each others’ ears that if wanting to pass the exam to
Tran Dai Nghia School, one should contact T, a teacher who introduces himself
as the teacher of a famous primary school in HCM City.
T said
that the tuition is 1 million dong for two subjects: mathematics and
literature; committing that the students attending his classes would have big
opportunities to be admitted to the school. As such, the teacher can earn 30
million dong a month from a 30-member class.
At Le
Hong Phong School for the Gifted, a 13-week training course for preparing for the
exams to 10th grades costs 1,610,000. Here a teacher can earn up to 70-80
million dong a month if he has 3-4 teaching shifts a week.
The
knowledge improvement center at No. 218 Ly Tu Trong has been well known among
the parents who have children preparing for the exams to state owned high
schools.
Mai,
the parent whose daughter goes to the center, said that she has to spend 2
million dong for a training course. “Though my daughter is a very good student,
I still decide to bring her to the center. She needs to get high marks from the
exams in order to be able to enter the Tran Dai Nghia School,” she said.
More exams, higher income for teachers
On
education forums, one just needs to search on Google to find out the names and
addresses of the most prestigious teachers who have experience in preparing
students for the university entrance exam. Most of the teachers are the
lecturers from the well known universities.
Students
flock to the classes run by the teachers, because they hear that many students
of the teachers pass the exams to prestigious schools. With the high demand,
the teachers always ask for high tuitions.
T, one
of the most wanted mathematics teachers in HCM City, is now living in a big
villa in the central area of the city.
Meanwhile,
P has been well known as an experienced chemistry teacher. Every training
course of the teacher lasts four months for which every student has to pay 1.8
million dong. If P runs three training courses at the same time, he would earn
billions of dong a year.
