TWO agreements are expected to be signed
today as His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is
scheduled to arrive this morning in the Turkish capital of Ankara for the
second leg of his five-day, state visit to the country, The Brunei Times
learned yesterday.
An
agreement on the "mutual abolition of visas" and another on
"economic, trade and technical cooperation" will be signed at the
Presidential Palace in Ankara, said the Brunei "Substantive"
Secretariat office set up here when contacted by the paper.
The
monarch will be in the capital to formally meet Turkish President Abdullah Gul,
who had invited His Majesty to visit the country.
The
agreements are expected to be signed during His Majesty's visit to the
Presidential Palace, where the monarch and the Turkish leader will hold
"four-eye" talks as well as a bilateral meeting between officials
from both countries.
The
leaders are also expected to deliver statements following the signing ceremony.
Bruneians
currently enjoy visa waiver for short-term, tourism visits to Turkey. In 2009,
Turkey's embassy in Malaysia announced that the Republic granted a 90-day,
visa-free stay for Bruneians visiting Turkey for tourism purposes within a
180-day period.
His
Majesty's one-day visit in Ankara will also see the monarch laying a wreath at
the Anitkabir, the mausoleum of the Republic of Turkey's founder and first
president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. After the visit to arguably Ankara's top
attraction, the monarch will receive an official welcoming ceremony at the
Presidential Palace and in the evening, attend a state banquet hosted by President
Abdullah in honour of the visiting head of state.
The
monarch is scheduled to depart that same evening and return to spend the last
day of the visit in Istanbul, with no official event scheduled for that day.
