Hong Kong - Panchen Lama makes rare public speech in Hong Kong

China’s selection as the Panchen Lama has described Buddhist theory as a way to end suffering, in his first public appearance off the mainland.

His speech in Hong Kong was another step in Beijing’s push for greater acceptance of its rule over Tibet. He spoke for eight minutes on Buddhist philosophy Thursday at the start of the third World Buddhist Forum.

Beijing installed Gyaltsen Norbu as the second-highest leader in Tibetan Buddhism in 1995 while rejecting another boy chosen by the Dalai Lama. That boy has not been seen since, and followers of the exiled Dalai Lama don’t recognize Beijing’s selection.

He said, Buddhist theory is “sweet dew that ends human suffering and is a way to promote world peace.”
