Health officials in Malang, East Java, are
carrying out a citywide campaign to tackle dengue fever after 31 people were
reported to have contracted the mosquito-borne infectious disease so far this
year.
Enny
Sekar Rengganingati, a spokeswoman for the local health office, said on Monday
that residents were being urged to clean out pools of standing water where
mosquitoes can breed.
She
added that there had been no fatalities reported this year but that the office
hoped to reduce the number of dengue cases from last year’s 163 infections,
which led to one death.
A
dengue outbreak in Malang in 2010 claimed five lives among the 879 people
infected.
