(KPL) Songkran or Pi Mai revellers can join
various festivities programme during a three-day celebration of Pi Mai Lao in
Vientiane Capital falling on 13-15 April.
The
first day-is called the last day of the old year, there will be a procession of
Miss Sangkarn or Pi Mai starting at 2 pm from Vat Inpeng-Vat Simeuang-Vat
Phaivat, Xieng Nguen to Vat Chanh and going back to Vat Inpeng temples.
On
13-14 April-second day is called the "day of no day" or Muea Nao, a
beach sport competition including football, volleyball and others, and a
festivity will be held on Don Chanh island starting at 9 am till 5 pm.
The last
day of celebration-locally known as Sang Khan Khuen or the last day of the
festival, there will be a sand building ceremony-locally known as Tod Pha that
Sai on Don Chanh Island and a closing ceremony of water playing.
The
work "Songkran" is derived from Sanskrit and means "to
pass" or "to move into". It implies the moving of the sun, moon
and planets into a new orbit in the zodiac. People in Thailand, Myanmar and
Cambodia organise similar festivals at this time of the year.
Public
water playing and pouring scented water into Buddha images each temple in
Vientiane Capital for a three-day celebration of Lao New Year is determined to
kick off at 8 am and end at 5 pm.
The
splashing water along main roads on 13-15 April, Setthathirath avenue or inside
the old city of Vientiane Capital-Vat Inpeng, Vat Ongteu, Vat Hai Sok, Vat
Misay, Vat Chanh, Vat Xieng Ngueng, Vat Sisakhet, Vat Kao-ngor, Vat Simueang,
Vat Phaivat, Vat That Khao, Vat Phasay temples and Chao Anouvong status will be
closed to allow for public to play
water.
As
people nationwide will celebrate Pi Mai Lao, which the official holiday will
compensate for more two day 16-17 April due to the Pi Mai this year falling at
week-end.
