The happiest region in the world is Northern Europe, with Denmark in
the lead, and the least happy region — according to the recently released World
Happiness Report conducted by the Earth Institute (EI) of Columbia University,
entrusted by the United Nations General Assembly — is Sub-Saharan Africa, with
Togo at the bottom. Taiwan ranked number 46.
The World Happiness Report, commissioned by the United Nations
Conference on Happiness and released on April 2, revealed that happiness could
not simply be achieved by acquiring monetary wealth. Instead, at a national
level, happiness — or well-being — is built on an array of factors, including
political freedom, strong social networks and an absence of corruption.
On the individual level, having strong mental and physical health,
trustworthy relationships, job security, and stable families are all crucial
factors that contribute to personal happiness.
Under such criteria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands
received an average life evaluation score of 7.6 on a 0-to-10 scale. Meanwhile,
underdeveloped countries such as Togo, Benin, Central African Republic, Sierra
Leone only received an average life evaluation score of 3.4.
Taiwan, with a score of 6, ranked number 46 on the chart overall, and
number 3 in Asia, only behind Singapore (33) and Japan (44). South Korea ranked
56, Hong Kong at 67 and mainland China 112.
The report “reflects a new worldwide demand for more attention to
happiness and the absence of misery as criteria for government policy,” and
serves to “review the state of happiness in the world today and show how the
new science of happiness explains personal and national variations in
happiness,” according to the EI website.
