Police and the forest protection force in the
Central Highlands province of Dak Lak are investigating the recent deaths
within one week of 3 wild elephants in Ea Sup District.
The
first death, of a 150-kg elephant, was discovered on Mach 26 in Sub-zone 289 in
Cu M’Lan Commune, said Mai Van Hien, head of the district forest protection
department.
Six
days later, the bodies of two other elephants, one weighing 400-500 kg and the
other 2 tons, were found in the same commune.
After
examining the scene where the 2-ton elephant died, police initially concluded
that the animal could have been killed, Huynh Trung Luan, director of the Dak
Lak Elephant Conservation Center, said.
Many
parts of the dead elephants had been taken away, Hien said.
The
illegal killing of wild elephants for their parts, including tusks, was not too
rare in some provinces.
More
than three months ago, a 7-ton elephant was found shot dead in Gia Canh
Commune, Dinh Quan District, southern Dong Nai Province.
The
left tusk, molar tooth set, and tail of the elephant had been removed before
locals found its body on December 23, 2011.
Local
police found 2 bullet tips in the head and the right leg of the elephant.
