Vietnam - Schools hurry to prepare weak students for grad exam

High schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are rushing to cram their low-performing students for the national high school graduation exam in early June, hoping the preparation will help lower the number of failing grades among the students.

Those schools have already handed out lists of weak students to their teachers so that they can draw up proper plans for helping them.

“We now pay close attention to students with poor school performance and try to help them score just enough to pass the graduation exam,” says Nguyen Duy Tuyen, principal of Da Phuoc High School in HCMC’s Binh Chanh District.

The school has identified a considerable number of students who stand a high chance of failing the June exam.

Students with poor academic performance at Le Minh Xuan High School, also located in the southern city, have been asked to attend extra classes to prepare for the graduation exam since the beginning of their second semester, which started in early February.

Similarly, Tan Phong High School in District 7 is rushing to tutor its weak students since about 20 percent of the school’s enrollees scored poorly on its recent preparatory tests.

Meanwhile, Tran Nhan Tong High School in the capital is running ‘special classes’ in which low-achieving students are requested to study graduation tests on math, literature, foreign languages, chemistry, geography, and history.

“Without these classes, over 30 percent of our students will not make it in the exam,” school principal Phan Thanh Tung says.

Another Hanoi-based high school, Phan Huy Chu, is utilizing the same method, as students with disappointing academic records are taking after-school classes where they have to brush up on what they have learned during the day, according to Nguyen Thi Nhiep, principal of the school.

The high school graduation exam is one of the two most important to Vietnamese high school students; the other being the national university entrance exam – Vietnam’s screening test to select students for its higher education system, which usually takes place in early July.
