Bridge – Unlike previous years, exam
preparatory centers now still keep quiet. 12th graders, who are gearing up to
prepare for the university entrance exams, nowadays are ready to pay a high
price to go to private tutoring classes, which are believed to provide higher
quality training.
In
general, 12th graders kick off their intensive learning campaigns in early
March to prepare for the most important exam in their lives – the university
entrance exam – to come in early July.
In
previous years, they went to big preparatory centers for university entrance
exam, which gathered hundreds of students and put 50-60 students into each
class.
However,
such exam preparation centers in Cau Giay and Thanh Xuan districts, and on Ta
Quang Buu Street, now cannot attract learners any more.
The
exam preparation center at No. 239 Xuan Thuy in Cau Giay district, which was
once a well-known address for students who intended to attend university
entrance exams, has opened again. There were two billboards installed at the
entrance of the center, showing attractive ads. However, only a few students
have come to register for classes.
Xuan
Long, a student of Ly Thai To High School, said that when he came to register
for a class, he found out that there were only two other learners. The class
opened only after three weeks, when the center could gather enough learners.
The
same thing is occurring with the centers in Thanh Xuan district. An officer of
a center said that in previous years, students flocked to Hanoi to register for
classes in early March. Meanwhile, the number of learners this year is just
equal to 30 percent of the previous year.
A lot
of exam preparation centers, in an effort to lure more learners, have promised
the fee discounts of 30-40 percent of certain students, equipped classrooms
with air conditioners, LCD TVs and drinking water. Especially, some centers
offer rooms with preferential rents of 350,000-400,000 dong. However, the
attractive conditions still cannot help entice students.
Hoang
Giang, a student of the Luong The Vinh High School in Hanoi, said that he once
came to an exam preparation center before Tet. However, he decided to give up
the class, because of the low teaching quality.
“It’s
better to review lessons myself at home and exchange knowledge with a group of
friends,” he said.
The
boom of online reviewing for exams also explains why students nowadays do not
go to exam preparation centers any more. Students now just need a computer with
Internet connection to access thousands of documents and exam questions for
reviewing. Meanwhile, the fee for online training courses is much lower than
the fee collected by the exam preparation centers, just 100,000 dong for an
online learning card.
The
students, who are not really confident in their learning ability, now tend to
go to small private tutoring classes, run by well-known teachers from
prestigious schools in big cities.
While
big exam preparation centers still lack learners, the training classes provided
by the Club of first laureates-tutors have been full of learners. Despite the
high tuition of 9 million dong per training course, every student wants to
learn there with the tutors, who all have deep knowledge and high achievements
in domestic or international exams.
The
training courses have become famous, because 100 percent of the learners there
reportedly pass the university entrance exams. Students gather for intensive
training for one month, and they do not return home during that days.
Students
in big cities nowadays tend to study with private tutors, even though the
tuitions are higher. A lesson with a tutor costs 80,000-150,000 dong, while the
students would have to pay 20,000 dong only if they go to exam preparation
centers.
