UK
Foreign Secretary William Hague arrived in Hanoi on April 24 as part of a
regional tour with education is a key element of the visit.
He will join the British Council in hosting a
discussion on Education for Prosperity, joined by Mai Trong Nhuan President of
Vietnam National University.
The pair will be joined by an audience made up of 70
students from the National University, UK Alumni and British Council teaching
centre students on April 25.
The Foreign Secretary will also confirm new funding
for education in Vietnam through the newly launched UK-ASEAN Knowledge
Partnership with the aim of assisting Vietnam and ASEAN partners to develop
world class learning and research capabilities.
“South East Asia is one of the most dynamic and
diverse regions in the world, and the British Government is committed to a
strong and lasting partnership with the countries of the region,” said Hague.
“As part of the UK-ASEAN Knowledge Partnership
announced by the Prime Minister at the beginning of April, the UK is providing
£300,000 of new funding. This will finance a range of education activities
including placing UK academics in ASEAN institutions,” he added.
The UK and Vietnam signed a strategic partnership in
September 2010 and education is one of the major strands of that partnership.
“I am delighted to be able to see how the
Partnership is working in practice, and hope that the UK will in time come to
be viewed as Vietnam’s number one strategic partner for education. That is our
aim,” he added.
During the event the Foreign Secretary and Nhuan
will take questions from their audience covering themes of education
internationalisation, education for prosperity and employability and skills.
The discussion will be chaired by British Council
Vietnam director Robin Rickard.
There are over 7,000 Vietnamese students studying in
the UK. Meanwhile, UK institutions are increasingly looking at either expanding
into Vietnam or running joint programmes with established Vietnamese
Universities.
The UK is currently advising on a Vietnam-UK
international standard state university in Danang.
During his visit the Foreign Secretary will announce
that 10 Chevening scholarships have been awarded to Vietnamese nationals for
the 2012 - 2013 academic year.
The successful applicants from the public and
private sectors will begin their post-graduate studies in the UK later this
year.
