Vietnam - University found listing tuition in dollars in ministry guide

A university has been found listing its tuition in U.S. dollars in a guide to Vietnam’s university entrance exams published by the Ministry of Education and Training, whereas the Vietnamese government forbids any enterprise or institution from quoting prices in foreign currencies.

Tan Tao University, an American-style private school based in the southern province of Long An, says in the handbook that students will pay $3,000 per year when they enroll in any discipline at the school.

Other schools simply quote their tuition fees in Vietnamese dong, except for programs they jointly run with international partners where dollar equivalents are also provided for reference.

Tan Tao, owned by a local real estate tycoon, is among the few in the country to use English as the medium of instruction.

MoET annually releases the manual to supply enrollment information to high school graduates, who are required to sit for standardized tests in the national entrance exams to gain admission to a higher education level.

Vietnam has fined many stores, hotels, and firms for quoting prices in the greenback since late last year.
