THERE are many areas that Brunei and Japan
can further enhance relations in such as eco-tourism, according to a delegation
of young Japanese ambassadors from the Japan-East Asia Network of Exhange for
Students and Youths (JENESYS) programme.
The programme
which was held from April 28 to May 7, 2012 comprised 10 high schools students
four boys and six girls from Okinawa.
A
farewell ceremony was held yesterday at the Red Jade Room, Centrepoint Hotel in
Gadong.
Speaking
to The Brunei Times Saori Nakachi and Yu Higashitokumine both said that they
felt they would come back and visit Brunei again either as delegation
representatives or just as visitors in the future.
"I
think the most memorable trip for me was the visit to the Temburong Jungle,
Brunei is really tight with nature," said Yu, 17.
Meanwhile,
17-year-old Saori said she felt that "many people in Japan do not know
about Brunei" and stated that "if properly invested in tourism, a lot
of Japanese would come to Brunei to enjoy the different culture".
"I
believe that other than oil and gas, tourism could be another big step for both
countries to tap into," said Saori, adding that the difference in culture
is what could really attract the Japanese to visit Brunei.
Present
at the farewell ceremony as guest of honour was Permanent Secretary at the
Ministry of Education Hj Mahrub Hj Murni.
"Since
you are going to be the future country leaders and regional leaders, when we
talk about globalisation and whatever issue that we would be confronted in the
future, all this understanding and friendship would be a positive step,"
said the permanent secretary during his speech where he addressed the JENESYS
delegates.
He also
hoped that the students have enjoyed their stay in the Sultanate and would
continue to keep in touch with the contacts that they have made during their
duration.
"I
hope the relations would not end here but would continue in years to come and
we will always welcome you back to Brunei, whether it is in your capacity as a
officer, ambassador or even a researcher," said Hj Mahrub.
Also
present was Japanese Ambassador Noriki Hirose who in his welcoming speech said
that JENESYS is a type of programme that demonstrates the connection between
Brunei and Japan.
"I
hope that all of you have made memorable experiences in the exchange
programme," said the ambassador.
Hirose
added that he also hoped that the programme has made the participants
understand and learn about different people, culture, society and history in
order to promote the friendship between both countries.
The
JENESYS programme was aimed at deepening mutual understanding among young
people who will assume important roles in the next generation in each East
Asian country.
The
programme gave the participants a chance to observe the Brunei culture, learn
about the Brunei educational system, study the country's nature and
environment.
