SINGAPORE:
Minister for Information, Communication
and the Arts, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, has urged the youths of ASEAN to help
strengthen the sense of belonging and shared identity in the region.
Speaking
at the opening of the 5th meeting of ASEAN Ministers responsible for Culture
and the Arts, Dr Yaacob said one way to stay engaged is through new media
platforms.
Singapore,
as the ASEAN City of Culture for 2012 to 2013, is helping to drive this effort.
One
initiative it is looking into is a Facebook fan page for arts and cultural
activities.
Another
project that has been helping to increase appreciation of ASEAN's shared
culture, heritage and history is the ASEAN Youth Camp.
Next
year, Singapore will host the camp and wrap up the series.
"The
youths are important to the future of ASEAN. They are tomorrow's leaders and
hence, it is important to engage the youths of ASEAN from a young age,"
said Dr Yaacob.
