The Philippines Embassy in Jakarta celebrated
its 114th Independence Day on Monday evening, emphasizing its intention to
continue mutual relations with Indonesia.
“Indonesia
and the Philippines have been supporting each other for many years. Indonesia
was there to support the Philippines during our crisis last year. There is no
doubt for me to continue this mutual relation,” Ambassador Maria Rosario
Aguinaldo said.
She
said that both countries had enjoyed multilateral cooperation in various areas
and were currently enjoying very close relations and that “it is very difficult
to define [both countries] close relations.”
The
Philippines Ambassador also thanked the Indonesian government for its support
for its country when it was hit by natural disaster last year.
Representing
the Indonesian government, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said while
delivering the speech that Indonesia expected the Philippines to play a more
active role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
A
powerful typhoon struck the Philippines in September last year, causing floods,
power outages, as well as disrupting work in its capital city of Manila.
The
diplomatic relations between both countries started on Nov. 24, 1949, while a
treaty of friendship was signed on June 21, 1951.
The
Philippines and Indonesia are members of the East ASEAN Growth Triangle
together with Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia in the BIMP-EAGA.
