Vietnam - Man holds dead baby to claim damages from hospital

VietNamNet Bridge – A man in the southern province of Ca Mau held the dead body of his newborn baby and walked around the local pediatrics hospital to ask for the doctors’ explanation for the unusual death of his baby.

The man is Nguyen Van Luan, from Ward 6 of Ca Mau city, who is husband of expectant mother Le Thi Kieu Nga, 27.

On the evening of June 15, Nga began labor and was brought to the Ca Mau Pediatrics Hospital. As his wife was in fierce pain, Luan asked doctors to perform a cesarean operation for Nga, but doctors did not agree.

Until 9am of the next day, doctors conducted the operation but the baby was dead already, while the baby was reported to have developed normally before.

The death of the baby made Nga’s family to choke with indignation. They blamed doctors’ irresponsibility and disqualification for the death. The father held his dead baby to walk around the hospital to claim for the hospital’s explanation.

The hospital met on June 18 to seek the reason of the death.

Earlier, on May 23, hundreds of people surrounded Van Dinh Hospital in Ung Hoa district, Hanoi, to ask for doctors to explain about the unusual death of a newborn baby.

Many newborn babies and expectant mothers were reported to have died recently, causing worry among the public.
