PHUKET, July 4 --Twelve
ASEAN city Mayors and representatives convened in Phuket, Thailand Tuesday
under the ASEAN Task Force on AIDS platform to address the problem of HIV and
AIDS.
The Meeting aims to develop creative and sustainable
solutions to reverse HIV transmission and mitigate the impact of the disease to
the people of ASEAN, according to a release from the ASEAN.
Senior Officials Meeting on Health Development (SOMHD)
nominated cities to forge partnerships and develop recommendations for
implementation at the city level, taking into account the sharing of best
practice, exchange of expertise and technical support, regional advocacy and
joint capacity building activities in the next three years. Representatives
from World Health Organization (WHO), UNAIDS, UNDP and the ASEAN Secretariat
are also expected to attend the meeting.
The 19th ASEAN Summit last November adopted the ASEAN

implement a regional initiative to complement expanding national responses by
Member States in priority geographical areas.

collaboration with the ASEAN Task Force on AIDS (ATFOA), Indonesia is the lead
country for the joint initiative under the Fourth ASEAN Work Programme on HIV
