PUTRAJAYA (Aug 8, 2012): Malaysia is making early preparations for
its chairing of Asean in 2015, with the Foreign Ministry planning to work
closely with diplomatic missions, ministries, civil societies and relevant
agencies to promote awareness of the 45-year-old association.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kohilan
Pillay said this was among the initiatives undertaken by Wisma Putra to further
strengthen the relationship among the member countries when Malaysia assumes
the chair.
He said several programmes have already
been initiated, especially for students.
"Through Serenta (outreach
and public diplomacy programme), we inform students on how Asean was conceived
and its successes to date," he said, adding that more activities were
being planned.
"With the support of
ambassadors, high commissioners and ministries, we are very confident that we
will host Asean and (assume) the chairmanship with success."
Kohilan was speaking at a
flag-hoisting ceremony in conjunction with the 45th Asean Day celebration at
Wisma Putra today.
Asked about the condition of a
Malaysian taken hostage by suspected pirates off the coast of Nigeria, Kohilan
said that Wisma Putra is taking stock of the situation. "Our embassy in
Abuja is monitoring the situation," he said, without providing details.
It was reported that last
Saturday, gunmen attacked a barge belonging to an oil services company off the
coast of Nigeria, killing two Nigerian sailors and kidnapping four foreigners.
The suspected pirates stormed the
vessel in the Gulf of Guinea. Nigeria's navy said those kidnapped were from
Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Thailand.
