The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) will launch a pilot programme on establishing a new educational model in 1447 primary schools nationwide in the new academic year 2012-2013.

The model will focus on innovating paedagogical activities, promoting students’ self-learning and self-assessment, and renewing inspection and assessment of students’ achievements.

It is also expected to encourage and develop appropriate teaching and learning methods for ethnic minority students, and those living in difficult circumstances and with disabilities.

The pilot also stresses the need to improve the quality of primary education and build up national-standard schools to be in line with improved quality of teaching staff and education administrators.

The MoET suggested pilot schools to attach special importance to education of ethics and life skills for students in collaboration with families and community.

In the new academic year 2012-2013, the education sector will continue promoting the campaign ‘Studying and Following President Ho Chi Minh’s Moral Example’, the emulation movement on ‘Building Friendly Schools and Dynamic Students’, and the campaign ‘Every Teacher is an Example of Morality, Self-study and Creativity’.

The sector will focus on improving educational quality and reforms, preventing and removing the so-called ‘running after achievements’ without paying attention to quality in education, and encouraging the creativity of teachers, education administrators and students.

* The MoET has announced the minimum number of textbooks for each primary school student in the 2012-2013 school year.

Accordingly, students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 will need six textbooks including Vietnamese, writing notebooks (Volume 1 and 2), Mathematics, Natural and Social Sciences. Students in Grades 4 and 5 need nine textbooks, including Vietnamese (Volume 1 and 2), Mathematics, Ethics, Science, History, Geography, Music, Art and Technology.

The ministry asks teachers to provide textbooks using instructions for students so that they do not have to carry more books to schools. The MoET also suggested mobilising funds for granting textbooks for students living in difficult circumstances, students who are martyrs and war invalids’ children, and encouraging the establishment of sharing bookcases to ensure that all students have textbooks to study in the new school year 2012-2013.

* In preparation for the new academic year, Hai Duong province’s Educational Equipment and Textbooks JSC presented 900 sets of textbooks worth over VND100 million to students who are children of martyrs and war invalids in the province.

The company has provided about 1.6 million copies of textbooks, three million copies of supplementary books and more than a million notebooks to students across the province.
