DEFENCE Minister Stephen Smith and his Vietnamese counterpart have
agreed to hold annual ministerial meetings to discuss defence matters.
Mr Smith said on Monday his visit
to the country last week had been "very successful" and had enhanced
Australia's relationship with Hanoi as it emerged as a leader within the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Mr Smith agreed with his
Vietnamese counterpart that the two countries will pursue annual defence
ministers meetings.
He also invited Defence Minister
General Phung Quang Thanh to visit Australia in 2013 to coincide with the 40th
anniversary of diplomatic relations between the regional neighbours.
"We've also agreed to
enhance our peacekeeping support to Vietnam, our English-language and
officer-training support and we've also agreed to explore giving Vietnam
assistance to remove unexploded ordinance," Mr Smith told reporters in
Perth on Monday.
