THE 16th annual leaders consultation between Malaysia and Brunei
Darussalam concluded yesterday with both sides expressing satisfaction with the
outcome of the meeting.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia's Prime Minister Dato' Seri Mohd
Najib Tun Abdul Razak stated in a joint statement that they look forward to the
"implementation of the decisions reached for a much strengthened bilateral
relationship and cooperation" between the two countries.
The fruitful meeting began
yesterday morning at the Prime Minister's Office in Malaysia's administrative
capital Putrajaya with a closed door meeting at 11am. Upon arrival at the
Perdana Putra Building, His Majesty was greeted by the Malaysian premier who
invited the monarch to sign a visitor's book before the leaders commenced to
Level 5 for the one-to-one meeting.
Forty minutes later, His Majesty
and Dato' Seri Mohd Najib proceeded to the Multi-Purpose Hall on Level 3 to
witness the Exchange of Documents Pertaining to the Agreement on Economic
Cooperation between Malaysia and Brunei.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Trade II Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock
Seng and Dato' Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir, Malaysia's deputy minister of the
Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), represented Brunei and
Malaysia respectively.
Following the exchange of
documents, His Majesty and the Bruneian delegation were invited to convene in
the Perdana Meeting Room for a briefing on the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang
Valley Initiatives by Senator Dato' Sri Idris Jala, minister in the Prime
Minister's Department cum Chief Executive Officer of the Performance Management
and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU).
The initiatives, cited a
governmental report released last year, aims to implement a comprehensive
makeover of the Greater KL/KV geography by improving its attractiveness to
foreign multinational companies (MNCs) and foreign talent, which also seeks to
combine an efficient public transportation system as well as the possibility of
providing for high speed travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
In the Joint Statement released
by Putrajaya yesterday, the prime minister stated that he welcomed Brunei's
interest to "invest in the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley Initiatives
as well as in the redevelopment initiatives of Kampung Bharu, Kuala
Lumpur". This is in addition to the Sultanate's "participation in
Malaysia's economic corridors in Sabah, Sarawak, Iskandar Malaysia and the East
Coast Economic Region".
After the briefing, His Majesty
consented to attend a luncheon hosted by the premier and Yang Amat Berbahagia
Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor at the Seri Perdana Complex who greeted his arrival
alongside the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Yang Amat Berhormat Tan Sri
Dato' Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin and his spouse Yang Amat Berbahagia Puan Sri
Noorainee Abdul Rahman.
The Chief Minister of Sarawak
Yang Amat Berhormat Pehin Sri Dr Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud and the Chief Minister
of Sabah Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman, as well as
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Shaziman Abu Mansor, the minister of Works and
Minister-In-Attendance and the Minister of Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Dato
Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek also attended the luncheon held to honour His Majesty.
Apart from YB Pehin Dato Lim,
other governmental representatives from Brunei who were also in attendance
include the Minister of Finance II at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Yang
Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Hj
Ibrahim and the Minister of Energy at the PMO Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu
Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar.
Before His Majesty's departure,
the monarch consented to visit the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Jalan Pinang in Kuala
Lumpur. The five-star hotel is owned by Bahagia Investment Corp (M) Sdn Bhd, a
subsidiary of the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA). The monarch's arrival was
greeted by BIA's Senior Assistant Managing Director Junaidi Masri, Hyatt Hotels
and Resorts Area Vice President Dato Willi B Martin and the hotels General
Manager Robert Dallimore.
At the Royal Malaysian Air Force
Base in Subang, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Datuk Richard Riot
Anak Jaem, Malaysia's deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and escorted to the
special aircraft by Works Minister Yang Berhormat Dato' Seri Shaziman Abu
Mansor. The monarch departed for Brunei at 5pm.
