Tuesday saw ASEAN+3 – China, Japan and South Korea senior officials meet
in Phnom Penh. Their agenda was to prepare the groundwork on energy cooperation
in light of the 9th Meeting of ASEAN+3 Energy Ministers, which will be held on
Wednesday.
The ASEAN officials and its three
dialogue partners including China, Japan and South Korea are bent on exploring
opportunities that can help accelerate cooperation in the energy sector.
Present at the meeting were Tun Lean, director general of energy department at
Cambodia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy (MIME), Takeshi Fujimoto, a
representative of Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Sun
Yang, a program officer at the Department of International Cooperation of
China’s National Energy Administration.
According to the talks, China
declared that as a growing economy, they are making energy conservation as its
priority. In fact they increase energy supply based on domestic resources. They
are on a constant quest to optimize their energy structure and hope for some
concrete outcome from the ASEAN Plus Three Countries meet. Mr. Takeshi Fujimoto
said that Japan was keen to give outputs to the areas of oil stockpiling and
