The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism yesterday outlined the progress of preparations for the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit and other important ASEM events, to be held in Vientiane in October and November.

Besides the ASEM Summit on November 5-6, the ministry reported on the progress of preparations to host other events, namely the Asia-Europe People’s Forum, the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting, and the Asia-Europe Business Forum.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the minister, Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara, said on behalf of the sub-committee on Information, Culture and Hotels “We are now ready for the summit as well as the other important events which will take place in Laos this year.”

Prof. Dr Bosengkham explained that the ministry had instructed several departments to prepare publicity about the events in newspapers, radio, TV and on posters.

The ministry has sent some media personnel on training courses both in Laos and overseas. It has also imported modern IT equipment from overseas for the international media to us e at the press centre.

“We have received some equipment already, while the remainder is expected to reach the ministry soon,” he said.

Prof. Dr Bosengkham poi nted out that the ministry has prepared cultural performances for the opening and closing ceremonies, saying “We will hold rehearsals by the end of this month which will be checked by the national s ub-committee inspectors.”

The ministry has already prepared 20 high quality, modern hotels to accommodate heads of state and their spouses and all members of their delegations during their stay.

Prof. Dr Bosengkham a dded that the ministry had also prepared other hotels in Vientiane for the international media and other invited guests. “In preparing accommodation, we have ensured an adequate supply of food and beverages as well,” he said. He also noted that the ministry has arranged tours in and around Vientiane so guests can experience the traditions and culture of Laos.

When they are not involved with the Summit, delegations can visit the Lao Handicraft Festival which will be held at Lao-ITECC in Vientiane from November 1-7. The event showcases both modern and traditional crafts that reflect the rich and diverse culture of Laos.

Visitors to the festival can meet artisans from around the country who will be selling a wide range of products including textiles, jewellery, non-timber forest products, recycled wood products, pottery and other items.

“We can arrange tours to other provinces if people wish, such as the World Heritage Sites of Luang Prabang and Vat Phou Champassak, as well as to various waterfalls,” said Prof. Dr Bosengkham

He called on all the people of Laos to feel honoured at being entrusted to host the ASEM9 and related events and to warmly welcome all ASEM leaders and delegates to Vientiane.
