The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism yesterday outlined the
progress of preparations for the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit and
other important ASEM events, to be held in Vientiane in October and November.
Besides the ASEM Summit on
November 5-6, the ministry reported on the progress of preparations to host
other events, namely the Asia-Europe People’s Forum, the Asia-Europe
Parliamentary Partnership Meeting, and the Asia-Europe Business Forum.
Speaking at a press conference
yesterday, the minister, Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara, said on behalf of the
sub-committee on Information, Culture and Hotels “We are now ready for the
summit as well as the other important events which will take place in Laos this
year.”
Prof. Dr Bosengkham explained
that the ministry had instructed several departments to prepare publicity about
the events in newspapers, radio, TV and on posters.
The ministry has sent some media
personnel on training courses both in Laos and overseas. It has also imported
modern IT equipment from overseas for the international media to us e at the
press centre.
“We have received some equipment
already, while the remainder is expected to reach the ministry soon,” he said.
Prof. Dr Bosengkham poi nted out
that the ministry has prepared cultural performances for the opening and
closing ceremonies, saying “We will hold rehearsals by the end of this month
which will be checked by the national s ub-committee inspectors.”
The ministry has already prepared
20 high quality, modern hotels to accommodate heads of state and their spouses
and all members of their delegations during their stay.
Prof. Dr Bosengkham a dded that
the ministry had also prepared other hotels in Vientiane for the international
media and other invited guests. “In preparing accommodation, we have ensured an
adequate supply of food and beverages as well,” he said. He also noted that the
ministry has arranged tours in and around Vientiane so guests can experience
the traditions and culture of Laos.
When they are not involved with
the Summit, delegations can visit the Lao Handicraft Festival which will be
held at Lao-ITECC in Vientiane from November 1-7. The event showcases both
modern and traditional crafts that reflect the rich and diverse culture of
Laos.
Visitors to the festival can meet
artisans from around the country who will be selling a wide range of products
including textiles, jewellery, non-timber forest products, recycled wood
products, pottery and other items.
“We can arrange tours to other
provinces if people wish, such as the World Heritage Sites of Luang Prabang and
Vat Phou Champassak, as well as to various waterfalls,” said Prof. Dr
Bosengkham
He called on all the people of
Laos to feel honoured at being entrusted to host the ASEM9 and related events
and to warmly welcome all ASEM leaders and delegates to Vientiane.
