KUCHING: Being China’s largest trading partner among Asean countries, Malaysia
stands to benefit from its fast economic growth.
Second Finance Minister Dato Sri
Wong Soon Koh said this at a dinner held here on Wednesday in conjunction with
the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
He said: “China has been Malaysia’s
largest trading partner. China achieved drastic economic development after the
introduction of reforms and opening-up policies.”
On bilateral trade between China
and Malaysia, he said it had been growing at a rate of 10 per cent every year,
adding a company from China had invested about RM300 million in the Sarawak
Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
He said apart from trade, China
and Malaysia had also worked closely in the field of education, and invited
Chinese students to study in a new technology university to be opened in Sibu
next year.
He also said the Chinese here had
a strong attachment with the Chinese people in China due to their history, and
that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had a strong sentimental
attachment to China.
“The setting up of a Chinese
Consulate in Kuching would boost the two countries’ bilateral relationship. We
have hope and confidence in China. I think the Chinese community wishes to see
China prosper and keep the relationship strong,” he said.
He complemented China’s
consul-general Li Shugang for being active in attending activities of Chinese
associations here and listening to the Chinese community’s problems.
Among those present were Deputy
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Infrastructure Development
and Communications Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, Federation of Kuching and
Samarahan Divisions Chinese Associations chairman Temenggong Lu Kim Yong and
Kuching South City Council mayor Datuk James Chan.
