SINGAPORE - Giant panda Kai Kai celebrated its fifth birthday in Singapore today,
with a delicious "cake" made of ice, carrots, and high fibre
biscuits, according to the Wildlife Reserve Singapore (WRS).
Kai Kai's special treat had to be
frozen overnight and weighed approximately 5 kg.
Together with his female partner
Jia Jia, the two pandas are here on a 10-year loan from China.
The pair are currently under
quarantine at the den block in River Safari. They arrived in Singapore on Sept
6.
According to WRS, both pandas
have settled into their dens and feast on locally-grown bamboo such as sulphur
bamboo and hedge bamboo.
After the quarantine period, they
will be released into their exhibit to explore and familiarise themselves with
their new surroundings.
Visitors can look forward to
visiting Kai Kai and Jia Jia at the giant panda exhibit at the River Safari
this December.
The River Safari, located near
the Night Safari and Singapore Zoo, will be home to the pandas as part of a
joint collaboration between China Wildlife Conservation Association and
Wildlife Reserves Singapore to promote giant panda conservation.
The giant pandas will be housed
in a specially constructed climate-controlled exhibit along the Yangtze River
display.
