Vietnam - Counterfeit degree market heats up in employment season

VietNamNet Bridge – It’s now the time for new university graduates to rush buy counterfeit degrees and certificates, which help them make-up for their profiles and polish their images in the employers’ eyes.

The counterfeit degree market has become more bustling these days, when university graduates have received their bachelor degrees and begin looking for jobs. There are many commodities in the market, while the prices are really “reasonable,” if noting that with just some hundreds of thousands of dong, a candidate would have better opportunities to find good jobs.

Vu Viet Ha, a fourth year student of the Trade University said the foreign language and informatics center on Giai Phong Road in Hanoi is a well-known address for students who look for informatics English training certificates.

The center is a small room covering an area of 35 square meters located on a small alley near the Bach Mai Hospital. Le, the receptionist, promised that one would get the certificates they want just after two days.

Ha said that university graduates now tend to buy counterfeit informatics and foreign language certificates instead of attending the training courses and exams for real certificates.

“We just want to “beautify” our CVs with as many certificates as possible,” Ha said. “I just need to spend 300,000 dong in order to obtain a “good grade” certificate.

In general, it takes three months to learn and take exam for an “A” level foreign language certificate, while it takes one month for “A” level informatics certificates. Meanwhile, if contacting the center, one would have to spend one week at maximum to obtain the certificates they want.

Counterfeit certificates with real signatures and stamps

The prices of counterfeit certificates vary. In order to obtain an “A” level certificate, one would have to pay 200,000 dong, but if wanting a “B” (good) certificate, he would have to pay 300,000 dong, while the price would be 400,000 dong for excellent grade certificate.

Especially, the center has affirmed that it can provide “real certificates” of the Ministry of Education and Training at the “reasonable price” of 500,000 dong.

When asked about the authentication of the certificates, the receptionist affirmed that the certificates are 100 percent genuine.

“If you can prove that these are counterfeit documents, I will repay money to you,” she said, adding that she sells some 10 degrees and certificates a day and she has not heard any complaint about the quality of the certificates.

When certificates do not truly reflect the qualification

Like other commodity markets, the counterfeit degree market also witnesses the stiff competition among the sellers.

When calling 0915.094.70x, the reporter, who introduced himself as a new graduate wanting an English certificate, was told that he would get a real certificate two days after he pays money.

The “service provider” also persuaded the reporter that it would be the best solution to buy certificates from him, because he can provide real certificates with the stamps of the Ministry of Education and Training. Meanwhile, other service providers can only sell the certificates granted by foreign language centers.

Tran Ngoc Long, Director of VMS Media Company, said in many cases, candidates have very poor foreign language skills, while they can show a lot of foreign language certificates.

He said the candidates, who clearly cheat employers, would not be accepted.
