THE Royal Brunei Police Force and HSBC's Security & Fraud team have
launched an investigation following the discovery of an electronic skimming
device at HSBC's automated teller machine (ATM) at The Mall, Gadong.
In a statement to The Brunei
Times, the HSBC said the fraud was being investigated and that no customers had
been affected. The bank went on to say: "HSBC would like to alert the
public to be vigilant at all times and to report any suspicious items, devices
or activities on any ATMs to either the police or the nearest HSBC
branch."
Skimming surreptitiously captures
data such as the user's bank account number and PIN number from the magnetic
stripe on the back of an ATM card.
The devices are smaller than a
deck of cards and are often fastened in close proximity to, or over the top of
the ATM's card reader.
An instagram image of the device
had earlier been circulated on social media sites.
