SINGAPORE: Students in Singapore looking to deepen their knowledge in sports can now do so at the new E W Barker Institute of Sports at Raffles Institution.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean was at the official launch of the institute on Saturday morning.
The institute is named in honour of the late E W Barker, a former law minister and one of Singapore's Old Guard leaders.
Mr Barker was an avid sportsman and the first president of Singapore's Olympic Council.
The institute aims to nurture students to become future leaders in the field of sports in areas like research, education and coaching.
Mr Teo said: "Sports are an integral part in developing a young person and whether it is sports at a competitive level or participatory level, I think it helps to build healthy minds, healthy bodies, and also an attitude towards winning and losing, so that you learn how to lose with grace and win with modesty."
