SINGAPORE: Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said students in Singapore schools have a more cosmopolitan outlook and interact easily with people from all over the world, something other countries are trying to emulate.
He was speaking to reporters after a visit to Rivervale Primary to commemorate Racial Harmony Day.
Mr Heng had returned recently from Bali.
"When I was in Bali for the Education Ministers' Meeting, I observed that many countries are now looking at how they can equip their students to have that broad understanding of other societies and cultures. I think we have a very precious foundation which we can build on," said Mr Heng.
Mr Heng added that parents are important as role models, and set a crucial example in the way they interact with neighbours and friends.
On the feedback he has been receiving on ways to improve the education system, Mr Heng said education is a long-term endeavour, and change should not just be for the sake of change.
Mr Heng said he will continue to visit schools and speak with students, teachers and other stakeholders.
He added the Ministry would make announcements of the changes progressively in the coming months.
Racial Harmony Day is observed on July 21 in remembrance of the 1964 racial riots that killed 36 people.
