Vietnam - Universities seek to lure students

The Ministry of Education and Training has asked universities to refrain from implementing "unhealthy" recruitment methods to attract applicants.

The second phase of recruitment to schools and colleges, which takes place from August 25 and September 15, is meant to help universities and colleges recruit enough students.
To lure students during this period, many universities, especially private ones, have resorted to including reducing minimum requirements, providing huge scholarships or presenting laptops and other freebies.
The Tan Tao University in the southern province of Long An pledges on its website full scholarships worth around US$25,000 to all students who apply to the university during the second recruitment phase.
The scholarship includes dormitory accommodation, daily meals, healthcare and a laptop for the first year.
Vice Director of the university, Dr Tran Xuan Thao, says in his school's website that students can continue receiving scholarships worth $22,000 per year for the three remaining years if they maintain academic excellence.
Tuition fees at the university amount to $3,000 a year.
Furthermore, the university's Economic Research Centre will provide zero interest loans or help find part-time jobs for students who do not continue to receive scholarships from the university, the website says.
Like Tan Tao University, other universities including Dai Nam University in Ha Noi, Duy Tan University in Da Nang, Eastern International University in Binh Duong Province, and Pacific Ocean University in Khanh Hoa Province are also offering many attractive scholarships for applicants.
Besides presenting cash awards of at least VND550,000 ($24) to each applicant, the Luong The Vinh University in Nam Dinh Province also pays commissions to high schools, continuing education centres and other education offices which introduce and encourage their students to apply for it.
India's Information Technology Institute NIIT Viet Nam offers promotion programmes for any student who applies for it. Students who live in the southern region can apply to the institute before September 30 to get a laptop or IPAD worth $520 if they pay tuition fees for two school years in advance.
If they pay the tuition fees for one school year, they will receive an IPOD Touch worth $260.
Furthermore, all applicants to the institute can enter their names for a lucky draw that has a Yamaha Exciter motorbike as the prize.
The Dong A University in Da Nang has reduced the entrance mark by 0.5 points for students who want to apply to the university.
For the second recruitment phase, the Dong A University has reduced by 0.5 points its own minimum entrance requirement marks. Universities base their minimum entrance requirements on total marks obtained in three subjects at the common university entrance examination.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga told the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that these methods could create unhealthy competition between universities and a bad reputation for the nation's education sector.
He said most of the ploys used by private colleges and universities would not work if the training they offered was not of high quality.
If an institution's training quality was below par, students would not apply, Ga said.
The ministry did not encourage universities to deploy such unhealthy recruitment methods. They would inspect the process and fine violations, he added.
According to Professor Pham Minh Hac, chairman of the Viet Nam Retired Educators Association, what is happening now is the result of allowing too many universities and colleges to be set up.
Applicants should weigh the pros and cons before applying for universities making exaggerated offers, he advised.
