Auto V Corp Bhd (AutoV), an automotive components manufacturer, is expecting to benefit from its collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
The company yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for research and development (R&D) commercialisation with the university.
AutoV chairman and chief executive officer Bernard Kong said instead of taking the same path of most automotive component manufacturers in collaborating with global players for technology transfer, the company chose the approach of collaborating with an institution of higher learning to develop its products.
“Product development takes quite a number of years. I hope to see the benefits within five years,” he said yesterday.
On the company’s role, he said apart from commercialising the product developed by the university, AutoV will also provide training to students with the aim of employing them as permanent staff upon graduation.
“As we carry out our responsibility in human capital development, we expect the students to come up with new ideas that can improve our (manufacturing, assembling and developing automotive components) processes,” he added.
He said the students will have to come up with theories, like maybe, on how to use new materials or utilise processes and such.
Kong expressed the hope for universities in the country to play a bigger role in the commercial sector.
“Universities in developed countries such as the UK and the US, play a big role in the commercial sector. So, we hope that can be applied here as well,” he added.
Main market-listed AutoV is the supplier to a number of car manufacturers such as Proton, Perodua, Honda, Isuzu, Lotus, Toyota, Hyundai and Naza.
The company’s core business is in the manufacturing, assembling and developing of car components, including window regulator systems, wiper and washer systems as well as steering columns and horns.
