Singapore - Young Singaporeans clueless about unprotected sex

SINGAPORE: Eight in 10 respondents in Singapore have reported not using any form of contraception when having sex with a new partner.

This is among the highest rate in the Asia Pacific in a survey of nine countries to mark World Contraception Day on Monday.

The 1,800 participants of the survey were between 20 and 35 years old, and included 100 men and 100 women in Singapore.

The survey was supported by 10 international organisations involved in sexual and reproductive health.

To raise awareness, a special smartphone application has also been created which prompts women to take their oral contraception regularly.

The survey also showed that Singaporeans were among the least knowledgeable about forms of contraception.

Common myths about ways to prevent pregnancy include having a bath or shower after sex, staying upside down for two hours, and rinsing the genital area with Coca-Cola.

The survey also found that a significant number of young adults here receive their information about contraception mostly from the Internet, as well as through friends and religious/spiritual leaders.
