A
seminar on accelerating the implementation of the National Strategy on Gender
Equality during the 2011-2020 period took place in Hanoi on Sept. 29.
The event was jointly held by the Vietnamese
Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the Vietnam
General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) and the UN WOMEN, an organisation of the
United Nations dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Opening the seminar, MoLISA Deputy Minister
Nguyen Thanh Hoa said gender equality is an important goal in promoting women’s
social role and limitations in this field are one of the barriers hindering
sustainable development and social equality.
She called on the entire society to reach
consensus and make strong commitment to realising the strategy in the coming
time.
VGCL Vice President Nguyen Hoa Binh stressed
that there should be specific suitable solutions to each locality and unit
while implementing policies on gender equality in daily life.
Delegates at the seminar agreed on the need to
continue improving policies on gender equality and enhancing state managerial
capacity in this field, pay more attention to information dissemination and
education, mobilise and use effectively capital for gender equality.
The national strategy specifies indicators and
measures to promote women’s participation in managerial and leadership posts,
narrow the gender gap in areas such as politics, economics, education and
training, health care and culture sectors with special attention paid to women
in rural and ethnic regions.
