Vietnam - Sept int’l tourist arrivals tumble

HCMC – The number of international tourist arrivals in September has tumbled by half month-on-month and fell 25.35% year-on-year, the national tourism authority said.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), citing statistics from the General Statistics Office, said foreign arrivals this month have totaled only 286,000 compared to August’s 552,000.

September is usually the last month of the low inbound season, and arrivals often go down, but a sharp drop of 50% is unprecedented.

The slump is seen in most inbound markets for the country. Notably, China and Cambodia, the two biggest visitor-generating markets for Vietnam’s tourism with the highest growth rate of 35.9% and 68% respectively last month, have also fallen this month.

The number of tourists to the country by air at the time has also decreased to 209,000, a 31.2% fall over the same period last year.

Furthermore, the number of foreign visitors for the purely travel purpose is also on the downtrend, shrinking by 24.6% compared to last September.

In all, Vietnam has welcomed 4.3 million foreign tourist arrivals in the January-September period, still a 15.5% increase compared to the same period of 2010.

While the number of international tourist arrivals nationwide witnessed a slump, the figure in HCMC increased, with 2.42 million visitor arrivals, up 11% year on year, according to the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
