Vietnam - High quality training classes at universities booming

VietNamNet Bridge – Universities are rushing to open high quality training classes, promising to offer best conditions for the classes and collecting higher tuitions from the students. This has raised the fear that other normal classes would be neglected and would not receive appropriate investment.

High quality training classes are numerous

At the HCM City Law University, the students, who passed the university entrance exams, can enroll in the high quality training classes, which are believed to gather the best students and produce the graduates with deeper knowledge and higher qualifications. Besides, there are also pre-high quality training classes reserved for the students who need to prepare themselves to follow the high quality training classes in the future.

The notice released by the school says that the school plans to enroll 150 students for three such classes. Students will have to attend an English test and an interview. If students still cannot satisfy the English requirements, they would be able to attend the pre-high quality training classes, where they will get more necessary knowledge for the high quality classes.

Students have to pay much to follow the classes. For the first year of training, students of high quality training classes have to pay 10.8 million dong, while students of pre-high quality classes 14.5 million dong. Meanwhile, fourth-year students have to pay 22.3 million dong and 30 million dong, respectively.

Explaining the big gap in the tuition between high quality and pre-high quality classes, an official of the school said that students of pre-high quality classes have to pay higher, because they still cannot satisfy the requirements and they need intensive lessons to have more necessary knowledge, especially English skills.

Meanwhile, the HCM City branch of the University for Foreign Trade, offers two kinds of high quality training – the one under which lecturers are given in Vietnamese and the other in English. Students have to have their English skills tested before attending the English-based curriculum. The tuitions vary: 14 million dong for English-based and 20 million dong per annum for Vietnamese based curriculums.

The HCM City Open University does not have “high quality training classes,” but have “special training program” with the same training purposes. Students of the special classes have to pay the tuition of 15 million dong per annum.

ML in Nha Trang City said that she was informed that the students of the special classes can sit in well equipped classrooms with air conditioners and have the opportunities to transfer credit to study at foreign universities. However, as ML cannot afford the high tuitions, her daughter has decided to go to normal classes.

“Students of special classes can go the classes located at the main campus of the school, while my daughter has to travel far every day, because her class is located in district 4,” she complained.

Normal students would be neglected?

It seems that high quality training classes have been opened at nearly all state owned schools. However, the tuitions for the special classes are different, ranging between 9 million dong and 15 million dong per annum.

Headmasters of the schools said that they have to collect higher tuitions from special students because they strive to provide training services with modern teaching instruments, upgrade the English skills and help students improve their soft skills.

However, educators have warned that once schools prioritize best conditions to special classes, students of normal classes would be at a disadvantage. The best material facilities of the schools, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries and internship opportunities, would be reserved for special students, while normal students may not be able to enjoy the good conditions.
